Boarding Life
Purpose-built boarding houses accommodate full boarders (7-day) and weekly boarders (5.5-day). Full boarders have access to all facilities seven days a week. Boarding fees include lodging, tutoring and supervision outside lessons, room cleaning, linen changes, and laundry. A weekend activity programme is provided. There are six houses in total.
RSJ offers day, weekly (5.5-day), and full (7-day) boarding. Full boarders reside in purpose-built boarding houses with access to facilities seven days a week. Weekly boarders stay overnight Monday to Saturday morning. Every pupil belongs to one of six Houses (School House, Rupert Brooke, Tudor, Sheriff, Southfield, Town), each led by a Housemaster or Housemistress with a pastoral team. About 55% of pupils board.
School Day
The school runs 5.5 days a week, Monday to Saturday, with Saturday morning including enrichment activities. Boarding houses are open from 7:00am and extend to final co-curricular and supervised homework sessions in the evening. Day pupils typically finish around 5:30pm after lessons and activities.
Student Life
Each RSJ pupil belongs to one of six Houses — School House, Rupert Brooke, Tudor, Sheriff, Southfield, and Town — creating a community across day pupils, weekly boarders, and full boarders. Houses are led by a Housemaster or Housemistress with a core team and tutors, providing pastoral care, social opportunities, and cross-year collaboration.
All pupils must wear the mandatory RSJ uniform before their first day. Uniform items can be purchased from Tombow or RSJ's school shop. If items are out of stock or delayed, pupils may borrow uniform or wear appropriate alternatives; if items are missing for other reasons, RSJ may purchase them on the pupil's behalf and bill the family.
All meals are served in the Dining Hall. Breakfast 7:00–8:00am, lunch 12:30–1:30pm, and supper 5:30–6:45pm, with snacks available in boarding houses during breaks. A choice of European, Asian, and vegetarian dishes is offered alongside salad, soup, and dessert. Meal charges are billed independently of tuition and boarding fees.
Facilities & Programmes
Wellbeing & Safety
RSJ promotes positive mental health through universal and targeted approaches. A trained bilingual counselling psychologist offers regular sessions and drop-in appointments. Mental health education is embedded in the PSHE curriculum. The Deputy Principal (Pastoral) and Designated Safeguarding Lead provide oversight, with concern reporting via CPOMS. The school uses Lea Waters' Visible Wellbeing framework across six domains and signposts pupils and parents to internal and external support.
Safeguarding and pupil welfare are paramount at RSJ. The Safeguarding Policy is led by a Designated Safeguarding Lead with deputy leads and health centre involvement. It references UK guidance (Keeping Children Safe in Education) and Japanese legislation, requires mandatory staff training and clear reporting procedures, and covers child protection, wellbeing planning, and a wide range of safeguarding issues. RSJ holds COBIS Beacon Status for pupil welfare.
